Heh, I noticed this floating in the drafts folder in my gmail today, it was a post I started writing for this here blog more than a month ago and then forgot about... Go me.
Last weekened Paulio came up to Lancaster to see Christian, Sian and me. From the hazy cloud of booze I remember us having a conversation about number stations. Christian had been looking at sites about them and downloading recordings. I'd not heard about the stations before but I did recall reading about something very similar in a Fortean Times once, where pre-internet phone phreakers in the 80s/90s would sometimes hear anonymous voices reading out looped strings of numbers. So you can imagine how we were a bit freaked last night watching the latest episode of Lost to find out the island itself appears to be a number station. And the fucking numbers are on that fucking hatch!

I can't recommend Lost enough, really. It's ace. It's peaked and troughed a bit after the initial rush of the first half a dozen episodes, but considering it's 18 episodes in and not had a shit one yet I'm pretty impressed. Of course both Firefly and Battlestar Galactica had what I'd consider perfect runs (I loved every episode) but they only had to manage that for like a dozen episodes.

Man, I have to stop saying the word 'episode'.

Anyway, obviously Americans are all too aware by now whether they like Lost or not, but for everyone else I'd suggest engaging the download engines. Or if you haven't got broadband, make sure you watch it when Channel 4 start airing it. Oh, and download Firefly and BSG while you're at it (if you haven't seen them yet, shame on you).

I'll miss Lost when it's gone, like I'm already missing BSG. As I'll probably (much as I hate to admit it) miss Enterprise too. At least Lost and BSG will be coming back for another series though.

I've kept meaning to write a post saying what I got up to over Xmas and New Year's, as more time's gone past though the more pointless it seems. Suffice to say I had a lovely time with family and friends, and lots of nice people got me lots of nice presents. And I drank too much booze on New Year's Eve, quelle surprise. I've got some photos I'll eventually put up at some point, that'll be exciting for you.

So there you go. Obviously there's been more Lost since then and it's continued to be ace. Feels like they're ramping it up for the end of the season too, which is exciting.

Meanwhile in the real world, my old job seems to have disappeared. I am still employed, kind of. It's odd. I'm looking forward to things hopefully getting a bit more normal again in the next week or two.

Dave played a gig at Feedback last weekend, it was fun. First time the Superkings have actually played in Lancaster, oddly enough. Funnily enough it was for a charity type thing, but not one that the band actually supports as such. Or maybe they do, it's hard to tell really. Being "anti-G8" just seems a bit too vague and hippyish to me. I agree that the West has given the Third World a shitty deal, but I also think that world trade is a good thing, over all. Maybe I've just been brainwashed by years of Toby. Aaanyway it was a good gig, and as a result the SKs will be playing at Feedback again, this time supporting Dufus and, excitingly, Jeffrey Lewis. I've been a fan of Jeff Lewis for years but never seen him live, so getting to (a) see him (b) see him in my hometown and (c) see him on the same night as my mate's band means it should be a pretty ace night.

I'll leave you with some exciting politics.

Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Your expected outcome:

Liberal Democrat

Your actual outcome:

Labour 2
Conservative -25
Liberal Democrat 48
UK Independence Party 15
Green 24

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.
